Prologue – STALEMATE
“Argh!”
I cried as my body slammed hard against the floor. I breathed heavily, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in my abdomen. I clenched my jaw. I must survive. I need to survive.
Surviving is all I needed to do since the start of the infestation. Surviving was a skill learned and perfected through trial and error. Each error was risk every time since you only live once. But for the first time, I was unsure whether I could survive…
*Crunch*
The debris crumbled as he walked closer. His muscular lean frame was covered by a leathered flexible jacket. His hiking boots grew near my face each second that passed by.
I faced many monsters, real and imaginary, yet his is the one that had me trembling to the core.
He kneeled down next to me and pulled me upward by my mangled hair in his hand.
*Clink*
I swallowed as I felt something cool under my chin. His piercing hazel brown eyes studied my face carefully. I don’t know what he was looking for by my grimace.
I winced at the sharp tug at my hair.
He scoffed in amusement. Just what was so amusing? My physical state? The current situation we were in? The fact that this could have been avoided if we weren’t stubborn? To admit that our wrongs? To admit that maybe the other party was right?
Thinking back, I can’t believe we were so young and petty and too prideful to see the big picture.
I closed my eyes and sighed.
We should have eloped together and build our own community, away from all the power, drama, hate, fear, and corruption that the adults shoved down our throats. We should have trusted each other….
I’m sorry for not trusting you.
*BANG*
